THE SUMMER BALLET COACHING COURSE 2010 Join us in the studios of London's Central School of Ballet this August to get into shape and discover new levels of ability. Internationally acclaimed dancers and teachers Linden Currey and Tom Linecar (see biographies on the Faculty page) will be taking you through a week of classes, coaching and repertoire to rediscover fitness, develop strength, fine-tune technique and finesse the artistry required to put you at the top of your game for the coming term or season. The day will start with morning class from 10.30 - 12.00, followed by either pointe work for ladies, virtuosity for gentlemen or pas de deux (ladies and gentlemen) from 12.15 - 1.15. The afternoon session from 1.45 - 3.15 will be dedicated to repertoire, looking both at solos and corp de ballet / pas de deux work. There will be time at the end of the day to stretch out and warm down in the studio. We are lucky enough to have fantastic pianists on hand all day to provide live music for every class. The course is open to young dancers, 16 +, who have completed a minimum of one year at full time vocational school. Drawing on superb design and evocative scores, Liam Scarlett, Russell Maliphant and Akram Khan, three of the most sought-after choreographers working today, have created dance works full of unforgettable and haunting images. Liam Scarlett's No Man's Land evokes the entwined destinies of the women working in munition factories at home and the men fighting in the trenches, through emotional pas de deux set to a score by Liszt. Twenty dancers tilt and sway in semi-darkness, rising and falling, in Second Breath, a “devastatingly effective” (Daily Telegraph) piece by Russell Maliphant set to recordings of survivors and live orchestra. With “dancing full of pain and power” (Independent), a pounding soundtrack and atmospheric lighting, Akram Khan's Dust grabs you from the start and does not let go. It won the Best Modern Choreography prize at the 2014 Critics' Circle National Dance Awards.

Down-a is about the guilt of the human soul. Difference and folly are acts of revolt in a homogenised, intolerant and repressive society. Each character is, in his own way, a distinct one soul entrapped in a guilty net. In the non-verbal performance Down-a, the senses become superior to the mind. The audience has to walk the tightrope between reality and madness and, in a flood of senses, is confronted with its deepest fears, emotions and obsessions. Down-a, down-a (vai giù, vai giù) is a refrain composed by an italian madrigalist. Down-a is part of the “Project Something in between”. The project has been ideated linked to the evocative history of the memory of psychiatric hospitals and the healing of the legacy of suffering and embarrassment associated to them.
