Baroque Dance Summer School

Fri 19 - Mon 29 Aug 2011

Rubicon Centre, Cardiff, South Glamorgan, United Kingdom

Female Baroque DancerBaroque dance, a precursor of classical ballet from the late 17th/early 18th centuries, was danced at royal balls and on the stage. The dance rhythms may be familiar to those with a knowledge of the music of the period, and include the minuet, sarabande, bourée, gavotte, gigue and the French courante. Composers to write Baroque dance music include Lully, Purcell and Handel.

This annual summer school covers the technique, presentation and reconstruction of Baroque dance, and is open to all levels. It is an ideal opportunity for those new to Baroque dance to gain a thorough grounding in the basic skills, or for more experienced dancers to benefit from intensive in-depth study.

The summer school consists of three self-contained modules each of which can be viewed as a short course. Those who do not wish to attend the full summer school may attend any one or two modules, or for just the first weekend.

The final day (bank holiday Monday) will take place at Tredegar House, a nearby 17th-century country house, and will provide opportunities to perform in period costume.
